jack_tar_sailingWhat better way to experience the natural beauty of the Lyttelton Harbour and the Port Hills than from a majestic Classic Yacht on Lyttelton Harbour?  If you’ve ever cast your eye across the Lyttelton Harbour and wondered how magical it must be to own a yacht to sail around the harbour on a sun soaked day, pausing for lunch in a sheltered bay - then read on.

Aboard the 1902 Gaff Rig Yacht “Oyster” you will be safe hands with the well experienced  skipper Mike Rossouw, of Jack Jar Sailing, who can take you and up to five friends for an inner harbour sailing experience like no other.

“Oyster” was a very successful racing yacht and won many races including the New Year's Day race at Kaiteriteri three years in a row.  Having changed ownership multiple times, it was in 1977 when she was finally restored, undoing the alterations which had taken place in Oyster's long history.

In September 1998, she caught the eye of Skipper Mike Rossouw who the following year purchased her and with the help of two friends, sailed her down the coast to Lyttelton. After receiving her Survey Certificate from the Maritime Safety Association, Oyster was ready for her new role as a charter yacht in January 2000.

Experience first hand what it is like to sail an old sail boat. Once you are out on the water, you will have the chance to see the beautiful scenery of Lyttelton Harbour, sailing around small bays and islands. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of dolphins swimming alongside the boat.

Take a full day; or book a half day to explore further around Lyttelton and its immediate bays. Take the time to call by Rapaki or Quail Islands, and enjoy a sheltered anchorage for lunch. Tea and coffee are provided however you will need to pack a picnic lunch or take a look at the tasty picnic baskets on offer for a quick and easy lunch option.

Or for something very special, book one of the romantic evening cruises - complete with a picnic basket, champagne and the tranquillity of sailing across the harbour, the experience is bound to deliver copious amounts of brownie points with your loved one.

Naturally trip routes and availability is weather dependent. Take on the adventure of trying something new.  Book a tour with Mike and enjoy an adventure and a yarn.
