With talk of meaningful partnerships in Lyttelton at centre stage these past weeks, it was a joy to hear from Yvette Couch-Lewis and her cousin Donald Couch, both from Rapaki, about the newly formed Banks Peninsula Zone Committee for the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.

The Banks Peninsula Zone Committee has been formed after being postponed earlier in the year due to the Canterbury earthquakes. The Banks Peninsula Zone Committee features five community members as well as four Rūnanga representatives and two from council.

Water restrictions will start on 8 October 2011 this year. Christchurch’s water supply systems were badly damaged during the 4 September, 22 February and 13 June earthquakes, the results of which have meant water restrictions are being imposed for the city for the first time since the drought of 1998.
