Lyttelton is world famous in New Zealand for being unique, artistic, colourful and at times a little gritty, creating an eccentric vibrant mix. And, quite frankly we like it that way. So it is with no surprise that when Jai went hunting for the most ideal place to set up her retail business, she chose Lyttelton first and foremost over any other traditional high street platform.
It was during an impromptu visit to Lyttelton that Jai noticed the building next to the Harbour Light Theatre was available for rent. Too excited for words, Jai contacted the owners to arrange an immediate viewing. That phone call started a remarkable business relationship. To this day Jai credits owners Tom and Helen for being the secret of her success during those first six months of trading.
From a background in design, fashion, and textiles Jai started her business armed with social conscience, a desire to support Fair Trade, and a love of Lyttelton. Opening the doors to Himalaya Design at 20 London Street in July 2007 was a dream realised, and almost five years on, Jai has no regrets.
As the creative hub of Himalaya, Jai undertakes most of the design work for the variety of gorgeous products available in store, and travels to Nepal four to six weeks every year. Last year the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre relocated to temporary premises at 65 London Street, Lyttelton.
You will find us in a very casual looking port-a-com building, next door to the Fire Station. Bursting with volunteer staff, we can offer quality visitor and local information.
For local residents come on down and visit us for a chat, share your story, or ask a question. We love to help, and are here to connect you with other members of the community or organisations if needed.

Open every Saturday morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm the Lyttelton Farmers Market is possibly the region’s best food market. Now, you might go thinking we are being a little biased – but if you factor in the Lyttelton harbour scenery; with the friendly local people; and highly knowledgeable Vendors - our Farmers Market is hard to miss.
From free range eggs to organic vegetables or fresh fruit; through to pesto; bread; cheese; dressings; fresh fish; smoked eel or salmon; beef; venison; chocolate; baked delights; flowers; or plants – the list goes on and on.
