The Governors Bay Hotel is one of the oldest, if not one of the most beautiful hotels in New Zealand. It has been in continuous operation since its establishment in 1870. After the devastating earthquakes of September 2010 and again, on 22nd of February and June 6th 2011, the hotel has been meticulously and fully restored to its former colonial glory. Of the nine hotels in Lyttelton harbour prior to February 22nd, the Governors Bay Hotel is only one of two that have survived.

Built in 1866 on a prominent hilltop 100 metres above sea level, The Rookery is one of the oldest surviving local cottages with wonderful panoramic views of the historic Victorian port town of Lyttelton, the main harbour, Quail Island, surrounding hills and weathered volcanic cliffs.
