Lyttelton Township and the surrounding Lyttelton Harbour Region can offer travellers, friends and family several accommodation options. As a result of the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, there are fewer accommodation options available, so to avoid disappointment, we strongly recommend booking ahead. In this section we have taken the opportunity to briefly explain the different types of accommodation you can expect to see listed: Motel | Motor Lodge. Generally offer separate units or studio style accommodation where you will have your own kitchen, dining, lounge and bathroom facilities. These facilities seldom offer catering services such as dinner or lunch meals; but breakfasts can be available at some motels. When staying in a motel or motor lodge, you will be left to your travel plans, but if you ask for advice, then we are sure your host will be more than capable of helping you complete your itinerary. Bed and Breakfast - is generally a guest bedroom within someone's home. Often these rooms will have ensuite facilities or bathroom facilities that are not shared with the host family. If you are looking to experience "honest kiwi life" in our harbour region; with the opportunity to really get to know the local residents; and learn about all the best places to visit that might not be on the average tourist map - then staying at a bed and breakfast will be the best option for you. As the name suggests, your room accommodation rate includes breakfast for each night you book to stay. Camping Grounds - are all about getting back to nature and experiencing the great outdoors. If you like to pitch a tent, or are touring in a campervan, then these are the places for you. Most camping grounds around the Banks Peninsula offer spectacular scenery; and some can offer a challenging drive to visit - something to be vary of if you're touring in a campervan around the Banks Peninsula. The Banks Peninsula is often larger than most people think, so be sure to stock up on food, water, petrol and any supplies you think you will need. Freedom Camping - is a relatively new craze to hit New Zealand, and is all about touring and sleeping in your own vehicle. The Banks Peninsula does not offer any freedom camping sites. It is an offence to park your car over night on reserve land. Freedom Campers are encouraged to use Camping Grounds around the Banks Peninsula - as they offer scenic locations, with plenty of opportunity for cooking, cleaning and offering personal hygiene facilities.
